He is always been around and acclaimed as one of the best actors. An actor with a rare combination of mass and critical appeal, Shamoon Abbasi is an actor who made a name for himself brick by brick. The best part of his craft is that he doesn’t fear being experimental. The actor was recently appointed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) as the president of the culture and sports wing for Sindh. 

In an exclusive conversation with The Daily Beat, Abbasi opened up on his plans to revive the media industry, his initiatives for the development of sports, his upcoming films, web series and Caravan Film Festival 2021. Unlike other diplomatic stars, his sincerity reflected in his conversation. Read on

“As the president of ISCW Sindh (all districts), my first priority within the social media sector is to sort out the issues related to remunerations and agreements. I am collaborating with Insaaf house to introduce a legislative way of getting these matters resolved through a legal department.”

He furthered, “For sports, we organized an event called ‘Young Women’s Olympiad 2020’ in collaboration with Nadeem Hameed Academy. We are pushing the envelope to make sports accessible for girls in Pakistan. We plan to arrange more sports events in 2021.”

Speaking about his upcoming films, he said, “I shot for five films in 2019, Nadeem Cheema’s ‘Dehli Gate’; Taimoor Sherazi’s ‘Dhaai Chaal’; Azeem Sajjad’s biopic titled ‘Choudary’ (The Martyr) and Mohib Mirza’s ‘Ishrat’ (Made in China). You will see me in another feature film titled ‘Hum Tum Ajnabi’. Some of them are complete while others are being shot currently. The projects got halted due to the covid-19 pandemic. I am hoping that all these films will make their way to the cinemas in 2021.”  

The actor gave us an update about his web series, “I am working on various web series; some are halfway through; some are yet to go on floors. I will be casting new talent for the web series.”

Talking about Caravan Film Festival 2021, he told us, “Caravan 2021, is my initiative to gather Pakistani filmmakers from around the world; invite them to participate and submit their short films up to twenty-five minutes and documentaries up to thirty minutes (any genre). The categories include best film, best director, best writer, best actor/actress, best cinematographer, best editor, best music director, and best documentary. The projects will be assessed by renowned jury members from the show business industry.”

He added: “The winners will not only win cash awards but also a chance to stream their work at Starzplay, a local OTT platform by Cinepax. Caravan 2021 is a global opportunity for filmmakers to showcase their craft in the global market. Submissions can be sent at “caravanfilmfestival@gmail.com

Shamoon concluded the conversation with a thought-provoking message, “My message for Pakistan is that we are going through some really tough times, therefore, the need of the hour is to learn to have patience, and not be unfair with each other.”
