Agriculture trade between China and Pakistan reached a new high of USD 860 million from January to September this year, with exports from Pakistan to China totaling USD 613 million, a figure that is expected to rise year after year.

Zhao Lijian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said on Thursday that Pakistani onions were of high quality and would be well received by the Chinese people.

“I stayed in Pakistan for a long period of time. The quality of the Pakistani onion is excellent. According to Zhao Lijian, who said at his regular briefing in answer to a query from APP, “we think it would be well received by the Chinese people.”

Specifically, he said that on November 23, officials from China and Pakistan signed the treaty on quarantine and sanitary criteria for the shipment of Pakistani onions to China, indicating that Pakistani onions have gained access to the Chinese market.

Zhao Lijian, who has lived in Pakistan for many years, said that Pakistani onions were of high quality and that he was certain that the Chinese people would accept them.

In his remarks, he said that China and Pakistan were all-weather strategic cooperating partners, noting that the two countries had strong commercial and economic connections, with China being Pakistan’s top trading partner for seven consecutive years.

As a result, he said, “We are prepared to collaborate with Pakistan to enhance trade facilitation, increase trade volume, and to forge an even closer community with a shared future in a new age in order for our cooperation results to provide greater benefits to the two nations and their people.”

CPEC Phase II deal between China and Pakistan would access Chinese markets for Pakistani agricultural exports. The agreement was signed as part of the second phase of the CPEC framework.

In recent years, China-Pakistan farm commerce has expanded fast, and despite the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus in 2020, the volume of bilateral agriculture trade has remained strong, reaching USD 717 million.
